A smarter way to choose
Finding an area that actually fits you is one of the most important decisions you'll make here, and the way the city is usually described makes it harder than it needs to be.
The comuna level, all of Poblado, all of Laureles - is way too broad. These are huge areas, and the difference between one slice and another is enormous in price, vibe, walkability, and who actually lives there. But the official barrio level swings the other way: 250+ tiny government-drawn neighborhoods, most of which are too granular and too obscure to be useful when you're trying to choose where to live.
So we built our own layer in between. We call them the MedellinHQ Expat Zones, the way we actually see this city after living in it. Each zone groups the barrios that genuinely feel the same to live in, and the zones themselves are different enough from each other to matter. Pick the zone that fits you, then fine-tune the specific barrio for your apartment hunt.
The foreigner epicenter, where the most action happens
Loud, lit, the foreigner epicenter
Provenza, Lleras, and the streets around them. Step outside and you're already in it - bars, brunch, coworking. Also the loudest and most touristy.

Walkable Poblado without the chaos
A few blocks of breathing room from Central Poblado. The closest Poblado gets to feeling like Laureles.

Close to it all - uphill from it all
You can walk down to the restaurants - but you'll Uber back up. Calmer than Central Poblado but still very connected.

Premium towers on the hill
The most expensive part of the city. Beautiful, safe, totally car-dependent. Best for families, remote workers, or anyone who wants space.

Flat, new, between everything
Sits between Poblado, Laureles, and Centro. Totally flat, lots of new construction, MAMM museum and Parque Lineal right there.

Classic Laureles: flat, leafy, walkable
What people picture when they say 'Laureles'. Grid of tree-lined streets, strong café scene, lots of long-term expats and students.

Laureles-adjacent, a notch less polished
North of Laureles proper. Cheaper, still walkable, and right by the Estadio metro. Naranjal is going through a big regeneration.

The park neighborhood, quiet and leafy
Similar to the northern Laureles crowd but quieter, greener, and built around parks. Super residential, almost forest-like in parts. Parques del Río is one of the best parks in the city. You'll head to Laureles or Poblado for restaurants and nightlife.

New towers, big views, off to the side
Cluster of newer high-rises on a hill. Great views and value, but you'll drive everywhere. Good for remote workers who want space.

The up-and-coming zone, Laureles lifestyle for less
A neighborhood on the up-and-up. Longer-term expats who want the Laureles lifestyle at lower cost, with more Spanish immersion and a quieter day-to-day. People don't end up here accidentally, you have to know what you're looking for.

The cheapest expat zone, maximum immersion
Like Northern Belén but further out, even cheaper, more Spanish immersion, and rougher around the edges. Some parts are hilly. The most affordable expat zone on the list. People don't end up here by accident.

Quieter, cheaper, more space
Walkable Envigado, minutes from Poblado
The sweet spot of Envigado: actually walkable to cafés and parks, close to Poblado, and noticeably cheaper. Very safe.

Poblado lifestyle, cheaper, safer, more local
Hillside Envigado. Similar feel to upper Poblado but cheaper, fewer foreigners, and arguably the safest area in metro Medellín. Lots of families. You'll hear Spanish, not English.

Space and affordability at the city's edge
The furthest zone from everything, you don't end up here by accident. Longer-term expats who prioritize space, affordability, and tranquility over proximity to the action. A pueblo feel near the park, hillside towers with views further up. Super safe, very local, and noticeably cheaper than Poblado or Envigado.
