Comunas

Medellín's 16 administrative districts

What is a comuna?

Medellín is divided into 16 comunas (urban administrative districts) plus 5 corregimientos (rural districts). Each comuna groups together a handful of barrios that share schools, transport, and political representation. When locals describe where they live, they'll usually name the comuna ("vivo en El Poblado") and then the barrio.

For an expat, the comuna tells you the general part of the city. The barrio inside it tells you the specific vibe and price point.
