Safety basics

No dar papaya, the local rule

Safety basics

The local rule is "no dar papaya", don't give papaya, meaning don't make yourself an easy target. Phone out on the street, expensive watch, laptop bag in a taxi, that's papaya.

Poblado, Laureles, Envigado, and Sabaneta are generally safe day and night with normal city awareness. Centro / La Candelaria is fine during the day but watch your stuff and skip it after dark unless you know where you're going.

Two specific things to know: scopolamine ("burundanga") is a real risk in nightlife, never accept a drink from a stranger, never leave yours unattended. And dating-app robberies happen, meet in public, in your zone, the first few times.

Emergency number: 123. Tourist police speak some English. Pickpocketing is far more common than violent crime if you stay in normal expat areas.
